Each of us, irrespective of age or circumstance, desires a life of health, happiness, and wholeness. We want that intangible “more to life.” With the assistance of skilled teachers and guides, we can progressively achieve this goal. That is the central teaching of the great healing and spiritual traditions. A personal mentor, coach, or counselor can assist with assessing your unique circumstance, develop a program that is tailored to your needs and lifestyle, remain by your side as a spiritual friend and helper, and partner you in successfully moving towards a happier and healthier life.
It is not easy to find a skillful mentor. Our focus on self-reliance has ignored the reality that there are things we cannot do entirely by ourselves. That is quite apparent when it comes to our education. None of us could learn to read or write without the help of others. Similarly, none of us would consider trying to build a bridge without the instruction, guidance, and mentoring of a skilled engineer. But when it comes to the most important task of life – creating a life of optimal health, happiness, and wholeness – we act as if we can do it alone without assistance from others. As a result, we often squander our time and energy on fruitless efforts. The realization that we require the help of a skilled mentor and the willingness to enter such a healing relationship is an important step towards realizing our greatest dreams.
